Wooden Waves

Mark Saracusa’s love affair with the ocean began with family visits to the New England seashore during the mid-sixties. In 1978 he rode his first surfboard and was turned on to “a wonderful lifestyle with a lot of travel, new adventures and great friends.” This also started a passion for drawing waves, the best of which appeared on his desktops in high school. Despite the resulting hours of detention, he continued doodling and sketching over the years, sometimes “adorning” his rented residences with wall murals. In the summer of 2007, a missed surf trip to Indonesia inspired him to take a screwdriver to a piece of scrap wood and create a sculpted substitute for all the perfect peaks he should have been experiencing first hand. The resulting homage led him in an entirely new artistic direction, and now, using traditional woodworking tools and plenty of elbow grease, Mark creates these unique carvings in a multitude of shapes and finishes.
