In 1986,
San Diego. California, artist
Bob Penuelas
introduced a dorky little
character named “Wilbur
Kookmeyer” to the surfing
world as a comic strip in
SURFER Magazine. Set against
the back drop of perfect waves
and smoggy skies, the Wilbur
strip was a satire on all the
strange and conflicting forces
that made up authentic
Southern California surf
culture. Wilbur, the
laughable little beginner,
struck a chord with
the surfing public and soon
became the mascot
for surfers everywhere. In
2006, after seventy-four episodes,
Penuelas decided that it was
time for Wilbur to finally
paddle into the sunset.
