Canary Islands

It was Christmas Day 1990 and the waves were macking. I had been living on this island for several months when some friends from New Jersey and Puerto Rico came over for a visit in late November. While part of the crew had left to get home for the holidays two mates did stay long enough to see this. That lineup looks like one long wave, but it's actually five different peaks. And it's way bigger than it looks. Unless you have a boat the only way to access the wave is by hiking down the 1500 foot cliff on a switchback trail of loose rocks. We made the trip down the afternoon before, surfed, camped out under the stars, surfed again in the morning, and then headed back up the cliff. On a break to rest and hydrate I snapped this image and it remains one of my all time favorites.
